A New York charter school will open inside Westland Hialeah Senior High in August

If you've got a little one near Westland Hialeah Senior High, a new school is moving into the building. Success Academy, a New York nonprofit charter operator, is transforming a wing for an August opening under the state's Schools of Hope law, which lets charter schools use space at underenrolled public schools.

Maleena Guandique, who will be the school's senior leader, says the youngest kids won't mix with the teens.
“I want parents to know that their kids are gonna be completely separated from the high schoolers, we'll have lunch at different times, we'll be in different spaces.”
- Other campuses: Homestead, North Miami, Hialeah-Miami Lakes and Jackson
- Aftercare: free, every day until 5:20 p.m.
- Uniforms: free; English instruction for kids who need it
The charter school will share the building but keep its own routines

The $700 is the sore spot. Antonio White, president of United Teachers of Dade, says it's "nowhere near the cost of running a school." Superintendent Rafael Villalobos says the district has to make sure "we have the better product" and that parents see it.
